I checked these little cliff openings for rattlesnakes but there were none. I can’t guarantee that there weren’t some a few hours later though. Snake country. One comes upon threatening scenes now and then. Being careful and adventurous are two sides of the same sword.

Just how did you check the holes? Did you poke a long stick in to see if there might be a hissing reaction. Yeck! I am so terrified of rattlers. 33 years ago, when I was living in Oyama, B.C., one May afternoon a young rattler wandered onto my lake-front patio and took up station under the picnic table. Armed with a corn broom I ran out and made sweeping notions near the table. It took off to a neighbour’s patio, and he smartly swept it into an empty garbage can, slammed on the lid and carted the snake up the hill behind our complex. It would not be great to go out barefoot to sit at a picnic table and share the space, unknowingly, with a surprised rattler. But, that’s a fact of life in arid regions – got to share space with alll kinds of critters. G
