The Priest on New Years Eve…

“When I saw people I knew from church at the New Years Eve party, I saw my own discomfort mirrored in their faces.

“Seeing their priest in a blue sequined dress at a New Years Eve party was like running into their dentist in a Speedo at the beach. They could hardly look at me. I asked Ed if we could go home early.”

– Barbara Brown Taylor in Leaving Church.

The Will of God…

“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.”

Susan B. Anthony

Basic Conflict…

“The only thing worth writing about

is the human heart

in conflict with itself.”

William Faulkner

Sing, Sing, Sing…

I go to church each new week.
I want to hear and feel us sing.
I must hear and feel us sing.

Wendell Berry wrote:

"The first man who whistled
thought he had a wren in his mouth.
He went around all day
with his lips puckered,
afraid to swallow."

After a while though
we come to whistle and sing.
And then I know I'm home.

(the poem is "The First" from Berry's book, The Part.)

Last Words…

If you think good things are on their way
and the world will improve, don't hold your breath.
Just go to the graveyard and ask around.
