Etchings in the Sand…

Thoughts and Photos from the Desert…

Quiet of the Study…

Read recently of the number of kids who do their studies with the television on. Several of our grandkids do instant messaging while studying for finals and use their cell phones frequently doing reading assignments.

The great moments of learning, to my way of thinking, take place in absolute silence and in personal, private retreat from the business of everyday.

I hope kids don’t miss that completely. Nothing quite like the sound of silence.

The sound of wind chimes in August evening’s breeze comes close….the scratch of pencil on paper…the sound of thread handpulled through cotton quilt…these too come close to the sound of silence.

Here in Oregon we lost three climbers on Mt. Hood. The sound of silence was a heavy, heartfelt, bowing-of-the-head-in prayer s-i-l-e-n-c-e.

Oh, yes. Thank you, Sharon. What a blessing.
