The Best of Sundays…

Whether one is religious or not, the sabbath might well be a perfect element in an often less than perfect week. It was, after all, Jesus himself who commented that the sabbath was made for people, not the other way around.
For the first time in our lives we have a genuine sabbath, a day of rest. As an an active clergyman, my Sundays were spent trying to make sabbaths as meaningful as possible for other people. This was a full-time job in itself. But I never knew sabbath firsthand.
Now, as happy retirees (who happen to belong to a fine church – which has an excellent Saturday Evening worship service and didn’t sell out to the “with it” crowd by stressing “relevance” and popular appeal over Word and sacrament) we not only are “fed” well on Saturday, but celebrate Sunday together by making it a completely different kind of day.
Relaxation. Renewal. Recreation. Peace. And, of course, my chili con carne for lunch.
We have a sabbath.
