Brazilian…

I was doing a photo shoot at Phoenix’s fascinating Desert Botanical Garden yesterday (watch my photoblog for the photos as I edit them) and while investigating a replica of an ancient Apache village a fellow appeared on the path and asked if I would take his picture. I, of course, agreed. He handed me his camera and I took several for him as he posed beside some imposing Saguaros.

We chatted for awhile and he told me that he was in town for an international business conference. He was Brazilian and had long been interested in our desert southwest.

It isn’t often that we get to meet people from foreign countries and I was as pleased as he obviously was to briefly cross paths with a stranger in such a beautiful setting.

Cowperson…

I read in the paper yesterday that our president and his wife, retiring in only a few months now, will be living in a ritzy suburban section of Dallas. All of his earlier indications had pointed to his dude ranch in Crawford.

Why am I disappointed in him again? Or still?

Recalculate, Fool!

My composer/professor son wrote something on his blog that made me – even his father! – think.

Very nice. I smile.

My new best friend is my portable GPS device that snaps into a holder on my windshield to tell me where I am and where I’m going. I have a terrible, terrible sense of direction so this has been a godsend. Even when I ignore Nüvi (the device), it can keep me awake arguing with her: “No! This IS the best way to go you silly machine.” To which she’ll say: “Turn left! Turn left!”

My favorite aspect is of the device is when I DON’T follow her directions, she simply says: “Recalculating…” and doesn’t give me attitude, just goes with the flow.

It occurs to me when I admire Nüvi’s amazing patience with me that people could learn a lot from her. When life throws things in your way and you end up going a different way than you had originally planned, get over it, move on, and RECALCULATE.
