Etchings in the Sand…

Thoughts and Photos from the Desert…

Props and Maturity…

Emily Dickinson had some wonderful insights. I’ve been studying Helen Vendler’s penetrating new book DICKINSON: SELECTED POEMS AND COMMENTARIES. It’s one of those books that are as refreshing as the first nice snow of winter or the smell of the freshness that comes with it.

The Props Assist the House

by Emily Dickinson

The Props assist the House
Until the House is built
And then the Props withdraw
And adequate, erect,
The House support itself
And cease to recollect
The Augur and the Carpenter –
Just such a retrospect
Hath the perfected Life –
A Past of Plank and Nail
And slowness – then the scaffolds drop
Affirming it a Soul –
