Etchings in the Sand…

Thoughts and Photos from the Desert…

Crucifix…An Art Piece.

One of my treasures. It all just came together.

Yellow Bells…

The desert is deceptive. The amazing number and quality of flowers that grow profusely here is astonishing. Here is a photo of the Yellow Bells that grow in our back yard. I can gaze at them thoughtfully for lengthy moments. Oddly, it never occurred to me to pull out my IPhone, shoot and edit a few renditions of their beauty until this morning.

Maundy Musing…

Several years ago, I was quite taken by a crucifix, created by our Pastor’s wife, Lynn. She had done it in textiles and attached it to a giant hanging behind our altar. I asked her if I might take the design and redo it with my own vision in clay. She gave me permission and I proceded to sculpt, glaze and fire several small versions of it.

I had an extremely dramatic rock on our front porch which I had picked up during a solo camping/fishing trip up in the White Mountains of Arizona. It seemed to fit the little black crucifix somehow. I attached the two.

One has to look carefully to see what is going on in that art-piece. Only a few notice it – the contrasts are too subtle. But those who do seem invariably surprised and thoughtful. Somehow it has it’s own personal effect.

It seemed a good thing to share on this Maundy Thursday. This is for you…

Surprise…

There’ a manhole cover in the middle of the street right in front of our house. Every day, when we walk Amy and Oliver, we walk right over it. Not a terribly impressive thing. I hardly notice it. It is not like a mountain or a lake.

But tonight Jo Ann was busy baking a rhubarb pie so it was just the pooches and me on the walk. I noticed there were words on the chunk of iron (or whatever it is they make the things from.) This couldn’t be a burning bush or anything like that, but I decided to pause and see what message was contained in the middle of our street.

It seemed strange enough that I hauled out my IPhone and shot it. The manhole cover.

Here it is. For your reflection.

Uh, we live in Surprise, Arizona. But then that in itself is worth thinking about.

trees in the early morn…

For the fun of it, I headed out at dawn on my bicycle, with IPhone in hand, to test out what the trees would look like. I spent a nice hour trying to capture something, then another at home seeing what I could do with what I caught.

Here’s one of my victims.

self-portrait…

I’m really not as blue as the attached iphone photo might suggest. Say “contemplative.” Or weird.
